With the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and particularly the latest generative AI, a new writing culture is developing. To use it effectively, complex skills are required: Which tool should be chosen? What tasks can AI be given? How should the chatbot’s response be assessed? Es macht klick (roughly: It makes sense) introduces learners to the basics of writing with AI.
In November 2022, AI software ChatGPT 3 was made freely accessible to the public. Within a few days, millions of users had already signed up. With a chatbot that could seemingly answer any question in seconds, it soon became evident that a massive transformation of the internet was underway. Just as quickly, ChatGPT found its way into schools, with students using the software to do homework, prepare for presentations and exams, or even complete their written assignments.
So how should this situation be addressed in the classroom? Es macht klick from hep Verlag teaches learners and teachers basic skills in dealing with AI tools. Which tools should be used for which tasks? How should instructions for the chatbot be formulated? And how should responses be evaluated? The book includes ten low-threshold “experiments” that invite students to practise the use of AI writing tools through specific tasks. Over ten students will reflect on their experience with AI and develop their own approach. Also included are six thought experiments in which participants look back on past digital innovations and consider how they envision the development of AI in education.
Es macht klick is suitable for a variety of teaching settings at secondary level II: in subject-specific classes across various subjects (German, foreign language lessons, general knowledge, history, geography, etc.) as well as in interdisciplinary theme weeks or on a self-study basis in preparation for writing a final course paper.
